Screening social justice: performing reparative Shakespeare against vocal disability / Alexa Alice Joubin
Article - English -
Interrogates the notion of literature’s 'reparative merit', the idea that performance of the literary canon can create a better individual, with particular reference to 'inspirational' narratives featuring the recuperation of a disabled character. Identifies two contrasting approaches taken by 'recuperative adaptations', exemplified by two films which focus on vocal disorders: 'The King's Speech' (2011) and 'Hauhap Gai Yun' ('Chicken Rice War', 2000). Part of the special issue 'Adaptation and the public humanities'.In: Screen International n1713 11 Dec 2009, pp. 26
